Save Money at Home on Beauty Treatments: 8 Easy Ideas
We all love the feeling of being pampered and looking our best, but let’s be honest – regular trips to the salon can add up! Whether it’s a fresh hair colour, a relaxing manicure, or getting your eyebrows perfectly shaped, maintaining a beauty routine can start to feel like a luxury expense. Luckily, there are so many simple and effective ways to bring the salon experience home without breaking the bank.
In this post, I’m going to share eight of my favourite DIY beauty treatments that will not only help you save money but also allow you to enjoy some self-care time right at home.
1. DIY Hair Masks for Shiny, Healthy Locks
If you’re spending money on salon hair treatments, I’ve got good news: you can achieve the same gorgeous results from the comfort of your home with just a few basic ingredients! Salon treatments for dry or damaged hair can cost quite a bit, but creating your nourishing hair mask is affordable and just as effective.
One of my go-to hair masks includes avocado, coconut oil, and honey. Avocado is packed with healthy fats that hydrate your hair; coconut oil adds softness and shine; and honey helps lock in moisture. Mash up one ripe avocado, mix it with two tablespoons of coconut oil and a tablespoon of honey, and apply the mixture to damp hair. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes, then wash it out with your regular shampoo. Your hair will feel soft, smooth, and deeply moisturised!
An egg and olive oil mask is another great option for dry or dull hair. Eggs are rich in protein, which strengthens hair, and olive oil is a natural conditioner. Whisk together two eggs and two tablespoons of olive oil, apply it to your hair, and let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Voila—soft, shiny hair without the salon bill!
But if you prefer store-bought hair masks, the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Hair Mask is a true hair saviour!
2. At-Home Manicures: Save Time and Money
Professional manicures are always a treat, but they can easily become an expensive habit. Instead of heading to the nail salon every few weeks, why not perfect your at-home manicure routine? Not only will you save money, but you can also do it whenever you have some downtime.
Start by investing in a quality nail care kit, which includes tools like a nail clipper, file, buffer, cuticle pusher, and some polish. You don’t need a fancy kit; a basic one will do the trick and last you a long time. Trim and file your nails, push back your cuticles, and then buff them to a shine.
The easiest way to get your nails done at home is to apply a press on your nails. Simply fill your nails, cut the cuticles, apply a layer of nail glue, and press the nail on hard for at least 60 seconds. Let the glue dry, and that’s it! Easy like that. I always recommend the brand KISS and their acrylic sets. Those are durable, beautiful, and look professionally done.
My favourite way is to go for Dip Powder nails from a brand called Aokitec, and you can buy a whole nail kit for a fraction of the price. These kits are much more affordable than regular salon visits and give you the same glossy, long-lasting results. At first, they might seem a bit tricky, but you will master it in no time, and it will take you only 20 minutes.
Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully (it’s all about good base coat application and dipping), and don’t forget to apply a good base coat and top coat for the perfect finish. The best kit to start with is the Aokitec 23 PCS Dip Powder Nail Kit.
3. Shape Your Brows Like a Pro
Getting your eyebrows done is often one of those small beauty expenses that add up over time. But if you take the time to learn how to shape your brows at home, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to maintain them yourself!
To start, you’ll need a good pair of tweezers and a brow spoolie (those little brushes for combing through your brows). The trick is to map out your natural brow shape first. Use your spoolie to comb your brows upwards and identify where your natural arch is. You can then carefully pluck any stray hairs around the arch, making sure not to overdo it.
If you’re nervous about doing it yourself, there are plenty of tutorials online that guide you step by step. Over time, you’ll get more confident in shaping your brows, saving yourself a regular salon trip. You can also try to tint your eyebrows with this easy-to-apply and affordable Schwarzkopf Eyebrow Tint kit.
4. Homemade Face Masks for a Natural Glow
Why spend money on expensive facials when you can create your own face masks with ingredients straight from your kitchen? Not only are homemade face masks fun to make, but they’re also packed with natural ingredients that can work wonders for your skin.
One of my favourite DIY face masks is a honey and turmeric mask. Honey is a natural antibacterial, perfect for treating and preventing acne, while turmeric helps with inflammation and brightens the skin. Simply mix a tablespoon of honey with a pinch of turmeric and apply it to your face for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, and you’ll be left with glowing skin.
Another great option is the Superfood Korean Clay Mask.
5. Trim Your Hair at Home
We’ve all been there—just a few weeks after a haircut, and your ends are already looking a bit scraggly. While major haircuts should probably be left to the professionals, trimming your ends at home is a great way to keep your hair looking fresh between salon visits. Plus, you’ll save a tonne of money by skipping those regular maintenance trims.
To trim your hair at home, all you need is a pair of sharp hair-cutting scissors (don’t use regular household scissors, as they can damage your hair). Start by sectioning your hair and working with small portions at a time. Hold the section of hair between your fingers and carefully trim the ends—don’t take off too much! You’re just snipping away split ends and maintaining the shape.
There are also lots of tutorials available online for different hair types and styles, so you can find the one that works best for you.
6. DIY Pedicures for Happy Feet
Pampering your feet with a pedicure doesn’t have to mean a trip to the salon. With a few simple tools and a bit of self-care, you can give yourself a relaxing pedicure at home that feels just as good as the real thing.
Start by soaking your feet in warm water mixed with Epsom salts for 10–15 minutes. This helps soften the skin and relax tired feet. After soaking, use a pumice stone or foot file to gently exfoliate any rough patches, especially on your heels. Once your feet are smooth, trim and shape your toenails, then finish with a fresh coat of polish.
To keep your feet soft between pedicures, moisturise them regularly, and wear socks to bed after applying lotion—it locks in the moisture overnight!
7. DIY Hair Dye for Fun and Affordable Color
If you love experimenting with your hair colour but don’t want to spend a fortune at the salon, at-home hair dye kits are a fantastic alternative. There are tonnes of options available for semi-permanent, permanent, and natural dyes, so you can find the right one for your style and preferences.
For a natural approach, try using henna for rich, red tones or chamomile tea to subtly lighten blonde hair. If you prefer a more intense colour change, store-bought hair dye kits are easy to use and come in a wide range of shades. Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully and do a patch test first to ensure you’re not allergic to the dye.
If you’re nervous about dying your hair at home for the first time, start with semi-permanent dye. It washes out over time, so if you don’t love the result, it’s not a big commitment.
8. Waxing at Home for Smooth Skin
Waxing is a great way to keep your skin smooth for weeks at a time, but regular salon waxing sessions can add up quickly. With a bit of practice, you can master the art of at-home waxing and save a significant amount of money in the long run.
There are plenty of at-home waxing kits available, from pre-made wax strips to wax that you heat yourself. When waxing at home, it’s important to follow the instructions carefully and to pull the wax off quickly and parallel to your skin to avoid bruising or irritation. It might take a few tries to perfect your technique, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner!
Final Thoughts
Maintaining your beauty routine doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. By incorporating these DIY beauty treatments into your routine, you can save money, enjoy some self-care at home, and still look and feel amazing. From hair masks to pedicures, there’s so much you can do yourself with a little time and the right tools.
So go ahead—give these tips a try, pamper yourself, and take pride in knowing you’re saving money while keeping up with your beauty routine. Who knew saving money could feel this fabulous?
